Above ground litter consists of downed wood, leaves and dung on the soil surface. It was calculated per biome based on a simple model including litterfall and decay rates as a function of rainfall. This was validated against the fuel load datasets. Biome factors calculated by Powell (2009), Shea et al (1996), Weider & Wright (1995) and van Wilgen et al (1990) were used.
